Farmers & the Common Agricultural Policy
Tractors in Brussels — and a third of the EU budget at stake.
In short
The Common Agricultural Policy remains one of the largest items in the EU budget. Farmers protested against green rules, trade deals, Ukrainian imports and red tape; the next EU budget proposes merging CAP into national plans, which farm groups oppose.
Why it matters now
The 2028–34 budget and Mercosur ratification have revived farmer mobilisation.
The divide
Farm lobby and rural parties
protect CAP and reject Mercosur
Reformers
reward environmental results
Net payers
cut farm spending.
